HYPOTHESIS Testing

HYPOTHESIS TESTING TASK FOR INDIVIDUAL BLOG

For this assignment, I will use the DOE experimental data using the CATAPULT that you have conducted during the practical. I will use FULL FACTORIAL DATA.

DOE PRACTICAL TEAM MEMBERS (fill this according to your DOE practical):

1. Person A (Iron Man)

2. Person B (Thor)

3. Person C (Captain America)

4. Person D (Black Widow)

5. Person E (Hulk)

Data collected for FULL factorial design using CATAPULT A (fill this according to your DOE practical result):

Iron Man will use Run #1 and Run#3. To determine the effect of projectile weight.

Thor will use will use Run #2 and Run#4. To determine the effect of projectile weight.

Captain America will use Run #2 and Run#6. To determine the effect of stop angle.

Black Widow will use Run #4 and Run#8. To determine the effect of stop angle.

Hulk will use Run #6 and Run#8. To determine the effect of projectile weight

As you can probably guess, I choose iron man!

For Iron Man, Thor, Hulk. USE THIS TEMPLATE TABLE and fill all the blanks

The QUESTION

To determine the effect of Projectile weight on the flying distance of the projectile

Scope of the test

The human factor is assumed to be negligible. Therefore different user will not have any effect on the flying distance of projectile.

Flying distance for catapult is collected using the factors below:

Arm length =  28 cm

Projectile weight = 0.88 grams and 2.07 grams

Stop angle = 30 degree

Step 1:

State the statistical Hypotheses:

State the null hypothesis (H0):

At 28 cm arm length and a stop angle of 30 degree, the distance the projectile will fly using 0.88 grams and 2.07 grams will have no difference.

d0.88 = d2.07

State the alternative hypothesis (H1):

At 28 cm arm length and a stop angle of 30 degrees, the distance the projectile will fly using 0.88 grams and 2.07 grams are different.

The lighter the projectile weight, the longer the mean flying distance

d0.88 > d2.07

Step 2:

Formulate an analysis plan.

Sample size is 16. Therefore t-test will be used.

Since the sign of H1 is > , a left/two/right tailed test is used.

Significance level (α) used in this test is 0.05

Step 3:

Calculate the test statistic

State the mean and standard deviation of Run # 1:

Mean: 192

Standard deviation: 2.14

State the mean and standard deviation of Run #3:

Mean: 169.6

Standard deviation: 3.81

Compute the value of the test statistic (t):

Step 4:

Make a decision based on result

Type of test (check one only)

  1. Left-tailed test: [ __ ]  Critical value tα = - ______

  2. Right-tailed test: [ _✔_ ]  Critical value tα =  1.761

  3. Two-tailed test: [ __ ]  Critical value tα/2 = ± ______

Use the t-distribution table to determine the critical value of tα or tα/2

Compare the values of test statistics, t, and critical value(s), tα or ± tα/2

t0.95 = 1.761

t = 13.57

Therefore Ho is REJECTED.

Conclusion that answer the initial question

When the projectile weight is lighter (0.88g) and arm length and stop angle remains the same, the flying distance will be longer.

Compare your conclusion with the conclusion from the other team members.

Ironman [Me]: When the projectile weight is lighter (0.88g) and arm length and stop angle remains the same, the flying distance will be longer.

Thor: Using a lighter Projectile Weight of 0.88grams will result in a further flying distance travelled by the projectile.

Captain America: Using a bigger stop angle would result in a larger flying distance of the projectile while using a smaller stop angle would result in a smaller flying distance of the projectile.

Black Widow: When the arm length is 33 cm and the projectile weight is 2.08 grams, the distance travelled by the projectile using a stop angle of 30 degrees is lower than using a stop angle of 50 degrees.

Hulk: When the arm length and stop angle of the catapult remain constant at 33 cm and 50 degrees respectively, as the projectile weight decreases from 2.07g to 0.88g the distance travelled increases.

What inferences can you make from these comparisons?

Thor who is doing the same analysis as me except for different runs arrive to the same conclusion as me. The rest of my groupmates also concluded that their factor affects the flying distance.

Hence, it can be concluded that all of the independant variables affects the dependant variable in this case.

Your learning reflection on this Hypothesis testing activity

Hypothesis testing refers to the formal procedures used by experimenters or researchers to accept or reject statistical hypotheses. The ideal way to determine if a statistical hypothesis is true is by examining the entire population. Since that is often impractical, researchers usually examine only a random sample from the population. If the sample data is not consistent with the statistical hypothesis, the hypothesis is rejected.

I have to admit the first time learning about hypothesis testing was confusing to say the least. While it might seem the topic can have the least effort put in out of all the topics in this module because all we are doing is just essentially sitting down and doing calculations. It was the opposite to me. It was very confusing, what's with all the left, right and two tail tests. Oh and don’t forget about learning how to read the distribution table.   I was kinda glad that there were practice questions given to us so that I can actually practice on how to use it. I definitely needed to practice myself to understand it better.

I’m glad that it was taught though because I felt that it was going to be useful in the future when I am doing projects that involve me doing experiments.
